Don't even touch the 3rd Edition of the PMBOK!!!

Most people require 3 to 6 months to prepare for and pass the PMP Exam. If you have the free time and can cope with studying and testing BEFORE 31 JUL 2013, then start, right away, with PMBOK 4th Edition material. The PMP Exam base changes to the PMBOK 5th edition on 31 JUL 2013. You should attempt your first exam about a month before 31 JUL 13. That way, if you don't pass the first time, you have a few weeks to study and try again (but the test centers will be VERY busy) before 31 JUL.  On and after 31 JUL 2013, the PMP exam base is in the 5th edition and (if you fail a 4th edition exam) you cannot retest using a 4th edition exam. So you MUST complete everything before 31 JUL 2013.

If your work/life/study balance cannot allow you to meet the 31 JUL 2013 cut-over date for the PMP exam, then take a breath and wait for a few months. Go read the 5th edition and become familiar with its content. I'm writing this on 18 FEB 2013. There is no 5th edition material available yet. The changes from the 4th edition are extensive!!! DO NOT start with the 4th edition and switch over to the 5th edition when the study material becomes available (probably APR 2013 or so). You will become very confused.

So, figure out your timing first. If you can cope with doing everything before 31 JUL 2013, then great; go for it! Otherwise, take your time and prepare to test after 31 JUL 2013.
