PMHUB-G I pressed the “End” button and passed the PMP Exam

I would like to thank all of you for posting valuable information which indeed was great source of learning. I would like to share my thoughts as under. 1. It took me almost a year to prep for the exam because of my other goals. I read Rita twice and PMBOK twice.
2. Didn't memorize ITTOs and infact there is no need to cramp ITTOs. Rather I understood ITTOs.

PMHUB-G Important points in PMP Exam LL

10.Make sure you understand the inputs and outputs of all the processess. If you spend most of the time in memorzing the input, tools and techniques, then it is waste of time. It wont help you in the exam instead spend that time in understanding them and comprising everything in an imaginary project management.

PMHUB-G New PMP - Yesterday exam July 27, 2012

Finally the summary show I'm scored just 65% and realized am in very bad shape to take real exam. Because my reading in forums reminded, one should score minimum 80% in model simulators.

The first thing I did was called Prometric and rescheduled my exam to extend 3 weeks by paying 70$, luckily that was the only day available to me, you cannot reschedule within couple of days of your exam and you'll lose your entire fee. I wantedly opted for 3 weeks; I know I cannot carry this further considering other official tasks.

PMHUB-G Sanjiv's Risk Response Plan for PMP Exam

Journey begins in Feb 2012. Everyone knows how to apply for application and all requirements. I get the confirmation to schedule the exam, my validity expires in one year, and I planned to attempt in 6th month because due to any reason I could not clear in first attempt, I will take 2nd attempt in next three month and 3rd (if required) in The next 3rd month before validity expires. I know it is negative thinking but I treated it as risk response plan.

Re: RES: PMHUB-G Re: which one is correct? 2 method of calculating ES and LS

Hi Gerhard,
As we don't subscribe to "teaching to the exam", we don't bother to debrief our clients on what was and was not on the exam.  Our commitment is to produce more competent, capable professional level practitioners, not just people who can pass multiple choice exams, which means our focus is on "best practices" and not exam questions.

In the last PMBOK Guide, PMI dropped ADM (with good reason, IMPO) as it is no longer used (last time I used it on a real job was in 1970-1982) and there is only one major software package which supports it. (Microplanner)

To explain quickly, when using ADM or AoA method of scheduling, the clock starts running at time zero.  Using PDM or AoN method, the clock starts running at 1.  This will explain it better.

To my knowledge, PMI no longer asks questions based on ADM, only PDM method....

PMHUB-G Estimating Time and Resources

When the project manager first begins to estimate the duration of the project she should always look for historical information. If a project of this type has been completed before historical information will be the best input to the project duration estimating process. This approach is also known as analogous estimating – where the project manager is creating an analogy between the two projects. When using an analogous estimate the projects don't, and often won't, be identical. It's an estimate based on projects that have completed in the past.

PMHUB-G One of the most Important concept: WBS

If the WBS is not about activities then why is it called a Work Breakdown Structure – and why is the smallest element a work package? Good question! When we think of "work" we often think of labor – like I'm working on a report. Work can also be a noun – like the works of Mozart or the works of Picasso. When it comes to the WBS you should think of work as a noun rather than as a series of activities.

PMHUB-G PMBOK 5th edition - are we there yet?

It's time to change! Following the practice to revise PMBOK® every four years (1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008), 2012 is the year to revise the 5th edition of the most important guide in project management. In fact, PMI is preparing three foundational standards for publication on 1 January 2013: more here

PMHUB-G Most insightful PMP Exam Lessons Learned

Although this LL was written about 4 years ago, the tips and tricks are all still very useful. The writer, Nagesh then contributed support to PMHUB in terms of monthly funds and and articles. PMHUb is very grateful for his support for several years and his special efforts to help financing PMHUB to benefit more than 100,000 members

"  If you are well prepared, 3. ½ hrs should be sufficient to go over questions twice (2nd pass is for Marked questions only)
- You have to start the Demo module first – it goes on for 15 minutes. You can exit out whenever you want to start the exam.
- When the Demo module starts, brain dump the following on the given papers
- Formulas for Cost equations, Float, LF/EF, PTA, Seller fees, PV on 1 page
- Cross chart of the knowledge Area & process group on 1 page
- Know AC, EV, EAC, EV, SV, CV, SPI, CPI very well. I almost had 10 numerical questions or so.
- Look at these below: Do you see an easy way to remember the CV/SV/CPI/SPI ?
- CV AC EV PV SV
- Develop Mnemonics to create the knowledge Area & process group on 1 page.  "

PMHUB-G Cost Management in PM

Have you ever noticed that it's usually easier to get more time than more money? While this isn't always true, increases in monies seem to be more difficult for most project managers to obtain. Stakeholders don't like having to pay more for a project deliverable, but they're usually more willing to give you more time to complete the project deliverable.

PMHUB-G John P. Reiling: How to improve your learning 10x

Research shows that typically we take away only a small fraction – about 10% after 30 days! – of what we thought we learned at the time!

When I spend my time, money, and effort on learning something new, I want to get the absolute maximum from it. I like to come away "changed", having mastered something new that will stick with me…

Research also shows that we, in fact, CAN take away vastly more – nearly TEN TIMES MORE!

PMHUB-G Earned value?

I asked them how they valued the work that they had completed to date, they responded that they estimated the percentage constructed against what they had planned. I pointed out that percentage of the product completed does reflect how they are tracking against time and cost. And when I asked them how they made predications about the future performance of the project, they admitted that it was just a guess.  They had never heard of EVT (Earned Value Technique) yet without it they may as well have been "managing" their projects by Ouija Board.

PMHUB-G Are you ready for PMP Exam?

Are you consistently scoring well on PMP practice exams? The PMI® does not publish a minimum passing score for the exam. This makes it difficult to use your practice exam score as an exact predictor of your actual exam score. A rule of thumb is that your actual exam score may be from -10 to +10 points of your typical practice exam scores. You do not need to be consistently scoring 100% on your practice exams, but a range of from 80 – 85% is a good comfort zone.

PMHUB-G Understand your PMBOK

The PMP Exam is mainly based on A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide). The most current version was published in 2008 and most people find a bit difficult to read. But due to the fact that the exam is based on this book, it is important that you actually read and understand all that it contains. As a supplement to studying the PMBOK Guide in preparing for the exam you need to get additional reference material.

PMHUB-G Be sure to answer all questions

PMI does not release the actual score that is required for you to pass the exam. All they tell us is that "The passing score for all PMI credential examinations is determined by sound psychometric analysis." So nobody but PMI knows how many questions you have to answer correctly in order to pass.

PMHUB-G Ajit's strategy for PMP Exam

Strategy to prepare: I started with the PMBOK and I agree that it is dry. However, I followed the method to write down on notes on each process which reinforces your understanding of what the PMBOK is about. I would then read the same chapter in Andy Crowe's book to get a more simplistic understanding of the process. I highly recommend his book because things are laid out in a much easier to read format. After each chapter, I would take the tests at....

PMHUB-G Ashley's LL - well formatted, well planned approach

Below is an outline of how I prepared for and took the exam, which I hope will be beneficial for future PMPs!

STUDY PLAN

3 Months Away:

  • Read the PMBOK Guide 4th Edition.  This was the first thing I did, even before I scheduled my exam.  I only read the PMBOK once, however, mostly because I found that I retained little of the information I read.  A lot of the information is repeated, not to mention I'm a hands-on learner, so reading 500 pages probably wasn't the best strategy to begin with.  For me, applying the knowledge I learned via practice questions was by far more beneficial than reading the guide two or three times.

PMHUB-G John Varges Researching LLs before writing his LL

I also have to say researching on the LL's from pmhub helped me out tremendously, I read on a fellow member's post that to use a brain dump strategy right after you start the tutorial at the test site. I took this method and I added my own twist, I practiced the brain dump and I timed myself, each time I did one I tried to keep it under 15 minutes. Since the tutorial is only for 15 minutes.
My brain dump consisted of the entire KA and PG grouping from PG. 43, all of the formulas that Rita mentions in her book, all of the estimate ranges CPI/SPI interpretations and Sigmas. The best time I scored was 12:30 Min. which was the day before the test. This preparation method helped me greatly since I am a very nervous test taker, and I didn't want to have a brain freeze at the test site.

PMHUB-G Gwennie' LL - what worked and what did not ...

For me, memorization was only good for the EV formulas. The exam is testing your understanding and knowledge of what to do in specific situations for the various processes. The only way to gain that knowledge is to understand each process in it's entirety: 1)what is the intent of the process 2)what do you need to complete it (inputs) 3)how do you go about doing it (Ts/Ts) and finally 4)what do you get as a result when it is completed (Os).

PMHUB-G How Kim got her PMP

I took a lot of simulated tests, some 10 questions, some 25 questions, 50 questions, 100 questions and yes 200 questions as well. ALWAYS REVIEW YOUR ANSWERS AFTER A SIMULATED TEST – the right and wrong answers because it's imperative to understand why and answer is correct or wrong. DO NOT USE study materials that do not explain why an answer is and answer. It is a waste of time. For this I would say don't use the Oliver Lehmann questions until you are confident in your knowledge because it is not an automated test and the answers have to be looked up and analyzed; this is time consuming and I literally didn't take his tests until Wednesday and Thursday of this week (less than a week from taking the actual exam). And did I say I took a lot of tests, yes, take as many as you can because it truly helps to lock in the knowledge.

PMHUB-G It took me 3 months

It took me roughly 3 months( which I personally feel is much longer than what I initially planned), I started studying with Headfirst which I collected from the local library and post completion of reading the same took up PMBOK 4. This helped me in understanding the tools and techniques in a much better way. I had to reschedule the exam twice due to various personal constraints and finally made up my mind to take up the exam on 18 Jan , with a week buffer.

PMHUB-G Jim reached the test center 30 minutes early

I arrived 30 minutes earlier and they let me started right away. I didn't dump the formulas . I think I know the calculation portion pretty well.
After about 30 questions I know I will pass. The real exam is not so wordy . The funny thing is sometimes you can tell some questions are not real ones. These kind of questions mentioned some thing you never heard and they even have grammar errors. I marked about 50 questions and went through them again . It took me about 2.5 hours (I didn't review the questions unmarked) and I decided to end the exam. I was very nervous at the last moment because the score didn't show up immediately. I had to do the survey first. and then the congratutions showed up.

PMHUB-G Alex reproduced brain dump chet sheet with little hassle

At this time, I had subcribed to PMprepcast by Cornelius Fichtner, PMP. This was very helpful to me because it provided a very good insight to the PMBOK guide, and made my studies more interesting. I also purchased the PM Formula guide by Cornelius Fichner. This made my understandinig of the formulae very easy, and i was able to reproduce my brain dump cheat sheet with little hassle.  Having registered to take the PMP exam in October 2008, I really did not start studying very seriously until l June 2009.

PMHUB-G scored “Proficient” in all the 6 area

Just when I was starting to feel in shape to write the exam, a distraction came up and I had to reschedule. When I realized that I would have to go after the exam based on the 4th Edition of PMBOK, I dumped the Rita Mulcahy and picked up the PMBOK ( probably for the first time!). The reasoning was that I would not be able to afford the next edition of Rita without burning a hole in my pocket.

PMHUB-G Frustrated and Panicky at Exam?

You may get frustrated or panic if you find some difficult questions from the practice/actual exam. Regardless of the exam results, you are still a good PM with unique strengths, skills and knowledge as the way you are. At least, you have already tried hard to enhance your knowledge by doing the exam.

PMHUB-G Using ITTO in real life?

So in a way i learnt the PMBOK by using the ITTO's in real life to check what happens when you use them. Well thats enough with the introduction ..now lets jump straight into the process . To start off I started reading Kim Heldmens study guide which was a e-book but I must say it was wonderfully written and it is designed for anyone thinking of taking PMP exam.Plus I had PMP podcasts to listen to during my commute . I commute 2 hrs everyday and I thought it was the best way to learn.

PMHUB-G A Hamburger's tips and tricks :-)

I started half a year ago with reading the PMBOK Guide. In parallel I listened to PMPrepCast. Listening one or two episodes a day really kept me motivated. I recommend strongly the interviews. Here people are asked about their experiences and recommendation during their preparations and the exam itself. Listening to the different opinions and experiences motivated a lot. Especially at the beginning of your study time you get an understanding of the effort it takes to pass the PMP. In addition to....

PMHUB-G It is NOT easy and not tough

Before going ahead I want you to pause on the mistakes I made and the troubles that I met. I have started reading the chapters from Rita Mulcahy and well understood the introduction chapters etc.., when I came down to framework it was good.

PMHUB-G Understand the concept first!

Next 6 months I was not that active and just went through HeadFirst when I got time. Also I didn't want to Memorize or grasp things and appear for exam within few weeks or months after course but to understand the concepts, processes, ITTO very well and apply to daily job too. This was my approach and it helped me see improvements in my project & daily job.

PMHUB-G Sundar – Passed PMP Exam

Materials used
When I started to read PMBOK for the first time it was hazy. I started to read the book by Andy Crowe and Rita Mulcahey. They explained knowledge and processes very well. I also purchasedPMPrepcast by Cornelius Fichtner. The podcast was very useful. I was also able to gain 35 contact hours from PMPrepcast. Link HERE

PMHUB-G Did not pass but here is my LL

I did my exam last Wednesday and I unfortunately did not pass.
I did think that I had prepared very well so here are some points to note before booking your exam. I may reiterate what other people have said already.

PMHUB-G Anil passed the test - it looked scary

Here comes the D day. The test looked scary. I had to take a break just after 50 questions and another break after 100 questions.

Even before hitting the End button, i was only 50% confident i would clear it. But to my surprise i passed with Proficient in 1 Process and Moderately proficient in 4 process groups.

PMHUB-G Ajay Sankaralingam: Cleared PMP on first attempt

I did not take an in-person Prep class since I was looking for a cost-effective option. PM Prepcastis a name that came up again and again in my search. I initially thought it was too good to be true. But all my inhibitions were cleared after just a few research. I bought it and set out on my path of PMP preparation. I was initially very slow in listening to the podcasts. This was the one time I used to wish for long commute to work so I could avail the time to listen to the Podcasts. :) I eventually finished the Prepcast sometime in July. I opted for the Prepcast primarily for the 35 contact hours certificate. It also gave a an introductory insight to PMP and its concepts. Kudos to Cornelius for his efforts to make a subject as dry as PMP, so interesting. PMHUBadmin: more info  click THIS. )

PMHUB-G Estimating again.... 4 types...

For those pursuing a CBAP® or PMP® how to use those techniques and whether they are mutually exclusive can become a bit confusing. Hundreds of exam banks for the PMP® exam often seem to force a PMBOK® based exclusion (see Sections 6.3, 6.4 and 7.1). That is not accurate. The estimates for schedule and cost are in practice used together and also not presented as mutually exclusive on the PMP exam.

Now for a quick review of how the four estimate types might work tog.....

PMHUB-G 10,000 PMs read this PERT

The PERT formula is mentioned in the 4th edition PMBOK® as a tool and technique of two processes—Estimate Activity Durations and Estimate Costs. The formula provides a weighted estimate—and the formula doesn't care if the numbers you use represent time or money—so that's why it's in both the PMBOK's Time and Cost knowledge areas.

PMHUB-G 8,000 PMs consider this LL useful

I decided to make a short pause after 50, 100 and 150th question.  When I got 50 questions answered I postponed the first break so my first pause was when I had 70 questions completed. During exam I drank coke, I did several breathing exercises and I could continue with exam. I really cannot imagine doing the whole test without these pauses (another applicant near me went through the whole test without break). Another breaks I had after 120th and 175th question. So after 3 short breaks I needed to finish last 25 questions and some marked revisions. Finally I answered the last, 200th question. I had 9 questions marked for later revision. After short check I changed the answer to one question and after 3 hours and 15 minutes from start I finished the test.

PMHUB-G Michael Fickery:on PMBOK

The important fact is that every line –  no every word in the PMBOK has it's meaning –  never leave a sentence you not understand !!! what about formulas i find how will I practice them !!! some people referee only to this 2 books and stop I Don't do this I refer to manybooks.as every time I read a chapter explanation by different Author I gain the meaning

PMHUB-G SSCORTAN - tips for PMP aspirants

You can take some breaks, go outside the room and eat or drink something, but it is on your time.
In the first 15 minutes of the tutorial I have written on the paper the table with the 5 process groups and the formulas (as stated in all the books), but it was useless because the calculation questions were very easy. I didn't use the software calculator, it was faster to calculate on the paper.
