PMHUB-G Should I certify, if yes then which Certification?

So should you certify? It depends on what your goals are. If your goal is to find a better project management job then I'd say having a project management certification is practically a requirement. ...

OK, now you would like to get certified.. which is the right one?

The Project Management Institute (PMI) offers 5 credentials in project management. Are you confused about which is the right one for you? Well, then here I am to help you find an answer.
Which PMI Credential is Right for me?

PMHUB-G PM from Chennai is now a PMP

"I just wanted to share my experience on PMP examination and wanted to portray briefly about this to all.  I was preparing for PMP for nearly a year from June 2009 to June 2010. I was a PMI member from 10 June 2009.  I started preparing by reading PMBOK 4 Guidelines , made myself clear with PMBOK tools and techniques. The 35 hour contact training i had, really helped me to understand about PMI as well as PMP & PMBOK. I had also gone through a book from Joseph Philips. This is really very intense and easy to understand the concepts of Project Management.

PMHUB-G Coming soon August 31 .... changes in PMP exam

I have been monitoring PMPHUB web visits stas and the number of transactions of PM Prepcast family (from Cornelius Ficthner), PMP Prep Kit from Joseph Philip and notice a big surge. The PMHUb web stats in the last 2 weeks surge by +20 to +30%... and from past expeieince this means that another new PMP exam is coming :-)

I guess PMP aspirants realized that they need to commit themselves to complete their PMP Exam project before August 31, 2011, or else face uncertainties relating to the new exam. A change of 30% in content is significant and most do not want to be in the first batch to write the neew exam where there are simply too many unknowns - facing bigger risks.

Psychologically, commmitting ourselves by acquiring resources and studying is a good way to pressure ourselves to be in combat mode.
Without this - time will slip away and in 6 months you realized that you are still an aspirant and have to face a new exam

My suggestion if you are PMP aspirant:
0. get brief ideas and get rid of myths surrounding the exam by visiting PMHUB digest: http://pmhub.net/pmdigest
1. plan to get your PMP before July 2011
2. make sure to read the LLs published in PMHUB blog: http://pmhub.net/wp and get tips and tricks and plan approach how to pass the exam
2. commit yourself to certain PMP study materials and acquire this ASAP

What is coming?  In a nutshell:

For PMP aspirants:
1. new exam will start 31 August 2011. You still have 6 months before facing a new PMP Exam.

2. no changes to PMP Exam eligibility (contact hours and experience hours etc)

Changes expected:
1. August 31, 2011: new exam. Still based on PMBOK 4,
2. Exam content changes: around 30%. Example: Professional responsibility is now tested as exam questions in every domain based on the question's relevancy

If you are a PMP - no impact at this moment. However the CCR may be revised

Make sure that you check more details here: http://bit.ly/fGJGG1

RE: PMHUB-G PMP Exam changes this August 31 2011

I don’t know for sure, but I know the PMP is coming under increasing scrutiny as more and more companies recognize it for what it really is- a rather basic, fundamental entry level credential.  Having some experience in the development of COMPETENCY standards, it looks to me like PMI, to their credit, is starting to move the PMP away from being knowledge based and more towards being competency based.

IF this is true (and I am doing nothing more than speculating) it should be a good thing, especially for those who took their PMP under the old exam structure.  IF I were in PMI’s shoes, the next time your PMP came up for renewal, I would require you to retest under the competency standards, not the knowledge based standards.

Now, having speculated as to where PMI is headed, the question remains- can you test for or infer competency using a multiple choice exam format? Professionally, I don’t believe so.

Dr. PDG, Jakarta

PMHUB-G Here is another PMP!

What was so important for me that I took very seriously all the suggestions for the PMP exam which were in Rita's book. I also purchased Cornelius Fichtner's PM Prepcast and listened to this material after each chapter. I prepared a PMP Exam formulas "Brain dump sheet" with all the formulas. Actually it is part of Rita's book but I made my own version of it.

RE: PMHUB-G Why is there a renewal fee for PMP?

Hi Ammar,

With over 100 million USD in the bank, despite PMI’s “not for profit” status under US IRS regulation 501(c)(3), they are for all intents and purposes a 20 million dollar per year “big business” complete with a CEO and the associated bureaucracy to support a business enterprise.

The reason I dropped my PMP (#740) and our company dropped our Global Chartered REP is because we no longer felt that PMI represented the values that I subscribe to as a lifelong professional practitioner.

FWIW, I am in the project management training and consulting business and have not lost any business as a result of dropping my PMP or in dropping our REP status.   If you are truly good at what you do, in the end, that is what the clients/employers are looking for.

Hi,

I have completed 60 PDUs requirement for PMP renewal. When I went to PMI website to renew my credential, it is asking for $150. Why? One has to spend money for certification exam, then on getting the PDUs, then on annual membership subscription of global PMI and local chapter membership... this all turns out to be a significant cost. After already spending so much over the years, shouldn't one get a chance to renew the credential for free?

I am disappointed that PMI is asking for so much money from me to stay as a PMP. I do not see getting enough benefits to spend $150 on the renewal.

Anybody else have the same thoughts?

Regards,

Ammar

Hi,

Can anyone please help me clarify the difference between Work Performance Measurements (WPM) and Quality Control Measurements (QCM) ? I know WPMs are SP, CP, SPI and CPI etc plus budget forecasts like EAC and ETC and are calculated using Work Performance Information (WPI). But I dont understand what is QCM. Is is the Quality metrics (planned from at Quality Planning Level) updated with WPI date to get filled / populated Quality Metrics ? Any clarification will be highly appreciated....

Best Regards,

Syed

PMHUB-G Prasanna's LL: prep list for PMP exam room

A great LL and probably the only one with a list of 13 items you will face in the exam room
======================================================
I also joined PMHUB Forums, the discussions there were pretty useful. From there i came to know about JIMBOK. Its a great set of articles by Jim Owens and its an excellent material for final day review. On the day prior to the exam, I went through all the ITTOs, Formulas, Theories and JIMBOK. It took the whole day. Actually i bough Flashcards for final review, but never find the time to use it. To be more precise i have forgotten that i had purchased flashcards

Re: PMHUB-G David Kohrell: Secondary risk vs residual risk

There is a comment from Gerhard Tekes that provides great insight into these risks... here at the bottom of the article in the comments area: http://www.pmhub.net/wp/2011/02/secondary-versus-residual-risk/

RES: PMHUB-G Difference between Work Performance Measurements and Quality Control Measurements ?

Hi Syed,

You’re absolutely right.

Quality Control Measurement is done in result of the Quality Control Inspections, populating the Quality Metrics.

Assunto: PMHUB-G Difference between Work Performance Measurements and Quality Control Measurements ?

Syed

PMHUB-G PMP & CAPM: 4 estimates types and how they work together

For those pursuing a CBAP® or PMP® how to use those techniques and whether they are mutually exclusive can become a bit confusing. Hundreds of exam banks for the PMP® exam often seem to force a PMBOK® based exclusion (see Sections 6.3, 6.4 and 7.1). That is not accurate. The estimates for schedule and cost are in practice used together and also not presented as mutually exclusive on the PMP exam.

Now for a quick review of how the four estimate types might work together.....

PMHUB-G Long journey into my PMP

So i thought PMP will be the best option & I started with the classes to understand and learn on how should projects be lead and managed. I realized that there was a paradigm shift and started applying the good practices that I learnt in the classroom into the project. It was working wonders ..well I didn't use all the processes but i had realized I had more control of the project and it felt good when we were done with the project

PMHUB-G Sharon Yuen: Lessons Learned

Initially I just read Rita's book twice and skimmed through PMBOK. The book covers a lot of useful materials for the exam but is a bit disorganized without too much ITTO concept. I found it was a bit hard to follow. And then, I started to read PMBOK

Zaki,

See research by Brian Hobbs and Claude Besner, University of Montreal….. http://www.pmi.org/Knowledge-Center/~/media/PDF/Surveys/Besner%20and%20Hobbs%20Practices%20Survey%20Report%20Phase%202.ashx

Basically makes the case that we don't use most of the tools & techniques that organizations such as PMI advocate we use…..

Are the PPM theories being followed in practice by companies also, do they implement it in correct way as desired. Is there any reference to this problem ?
i read a reference of this problem in this article by Blichfeldt and Eskerod (2008) 'PPM-there is more to it than what management enacts' , international jounral of project management.

need your view point
