To my knowledge, calling what should be known as a time scaled logic diagram
a PERT chart started with Microsoft Project. (This was told to me by an old
colleague who worked for MSP as a project management consultant in Redmond,
WA about 25 or so years back) He fought long and hard to get MSP to change
the name, with they finally did around MSP 2000 or thereabouts.......
As for the use of Activity or Task, if you check out Max Wideman's highly
respected Comparative Glossary of Project Management terms,
http://www.maxwideman.com/pmglossary/PMG_A01.htm#Activity you can see the
two are often used interchangeably, but as Max noted, his recommendation is
that a task is a subset of activities.
To confirm this, AACE in their Cost Engineering Terms views Tasks as a
subset of Activities. http://www.aacei.org/technical/rps/10s-90.pdf
Worth noting is BOTH Max http://www.maxwideman.com/ and AACE
http://www.aacei.org/technical/rp.shtml have made our collective wisdom
available AT NO COST....... Compare this against PMI who charges for
EVERYTHING........????
Hmmmmmm........ Give this some serious thought....... Which organizations
should we be supporting? Those who charge for everything or those who make
our collective knowledge, which we freely donate, available to us at no
cost.......????
